Every Week is “SHARK WEEK” in Puerto Vallarta!
Gosh we love it here! Every day is like being on vacation: No pressure, no urgency and no responsibilities. Whoa! Get real! After you are here more than a few weeks, you begin to notice that there are real life dangers here – and it isn’t crime!
Two of the greatest dangers are:
1. Buses and Taxis: It’s best to think of our buses as great white sharks patrolling for an easy meal. Don’t let it be you! Taxis are like the scavenger fish that follow along with the shark, feeding on smaller prey. The big old lumbering “sharks” (buses) go where they want, when they want, without regard to others. Likewise, the smaller, but quicker (and equally insane) taxis dart this way and that to get to the scraps the buses leave behind. Keep your eyes open so you don’t become someone’s lunch and remember: Every Week is “SHARK WEEK” in Puerto Vallarta!
2. Our “quaint” sidewalks, stairways and cobblestone streets, with their potholes, steep curbs, cracks, crooked steps and live electrical wires are hazards to anyone, young or old – especially the not-so-young like us! Watch where you are walking!
Sharks and sidewalks are dangerous enough, but the greatest danger is Vacation Thinking.
Vacation Thinking is acting as if we are on vacation here not being responsible for protecting ourselves like we do back home - wherever that may be. Vacation Thinking has us ignore the very real possibility of accidents (sharks and sidewalks) as well as illness. Vacation Thinking has us thinking we are still 30-something and impervious to life’s inevitable challenges.
Medical care in Mexico is affordable, but it is not free! If you get sick or slip on a sidewalk or if one of our “sharks” attacks, your financial future will be at risk! You can’t leave the country owing hospital bills, so going without medical insurance coverage here is a “you bet your condo” bad idea!
